336 Arhat Ratnadhara (Holder of Jewels)

A noble person values loyalty and righteousness and disdains money; a petty person is greedy for money and forgets righteousness. Therefore, be cautious in making friends; do not befriend opportunistic petty people. If you cannot satisfy their desires, you will surely suffer harm from them.

For those who receive this verse, one must not associate with petty people. A noble person values wealth lightly and righteousness heavily, while a petty person sees profit and forgets righteousness. This is a reliable standard for distinguishing between noble and petty people. Petty people are not only greedy for money but also narrow-minded and utterly without conscience. If you cannot satisfy their endless desires, you will surely incur their resentment and suffer losses. Therefore, petty people must never be befriended.
