378 Arhat Puṇyavikrānta (Cultivating Good Conduct)

Clothes should be new to be presentable and show spirit; friends should be old to be truly known and interacted with comfortably. A person's character is not revealed overnight; only friends cultivated through long interaction and tested by time are trustworthy.

For those who receive this verse, one should seriously consider their way of making friends. A person cannot be without friends; friends are irreplaceable by any other relationship. One cannot judge a friend solely by one incident; do not simply and rudely judge a friend's quality by one mistake, especially friends who have accompanied you for a long time in life. Better to lose a thousand pieces of gold than to lose a friend (of course, a close friend); this saying is worth pondering.
