448 Arhat Kṛtārtha (Achieving Righteousness)


Just one flower blooming, even if it is very lush, does not represent spring; just one tree growing, even if it is very dense, cannot form a forest. A person alone is helpless, with only their shadow as a companion; if a Buddha preaches the Dharma, but there are no believers, who will listen to the Buddhist scriptures?


For those who receive this verse, one is not good at interacting with others and not skilled at communicating with them, resulting in no friends when lonely and no one to comfort when discouraged. Humans are social animals; to be among people but feel like in a desert is a tragic thing.
